WHAT TIME IS IT?...Coverage of Glenn on BreeFM
Glenn, live on BreeFM @11pm EST, Wednesday.
This article was written live during the show. As such it may contain significant factual errors. Over time it is hoped that these will be corrected.
Glenn gave a big thanks to the Red Army. For the last 5 episodes of Rachel videos the grand total is just over 1 million views. Glenn said we are more like a punk rock band because we have a sense of community. It has been a year and a half of Glenn's life and he appreciates all the dedication and support. There have been difficulties and challenges. Glenn says that he is accountable to the audience. Glenn says we need to pause for a second and look after the business side of the project. Jeromy works independently of Glenn on his component of RedEarth88.
In YouTube comments you can tell the people who have been listening to the radio show. If you have followed Glenn's work you would realize that he does not like to stick to one format. He likes to reinvent things.
The Rachel videos give you one perspective. If you know about Tachyon this is a much different series. Some people have not been looking deeper. If you want meaningless action go watch Rambo.
With Human Ransom, Miles and Greg were not that excited about doing a "Tachyon centric" video. They were worried about killing their format so Glenn had to fight for it. They really liked it when it was done and they saw the finished product. After that they became more comfortable giving Glenn additional control.
It was shot in 2 hrs including the blocking. It was stressful. It was shot around a year ago. Perhaps one day Glenn will be able to share some of the out takes. It includes some of the inspiration for the bus shots in a later video with RedEarth88 " Tide To Revenge Afire". Glenn has all the masters because he owns everything he shoots. He says that it plays really well on the big screen. Perhaps Glenn will talk about it in a later show.

TAAG: "Teen Angst Adventure Gang" - Glenn has the trademark and the domain. He had an idea for an animated behind the scenes series of an online show. He has some test animation footage.

iTUNES: Tachyon theme and a few other arrangements. OpAphid theme. Glenn is working on making it happen on iTunes.

Starring: Dr. Drew Pinsky, Daniel Baldwin, Mary Carey. Chyna, Jeff Conaway, Jaimee Foxworth, Brigitte Nielsen, Ricco Rodriguez, Jessica Sierra, Seth Binzer
Glenn's Theory: Glenn does not think that some celebs are always as messed up as they try to appear (eg Brigitte Nielsen)
Loveline: someone put out 150 episodes of Loveline (1996-2000) in mp3 format. Glenn called in 1999 and he wishes he had a tape of the call.
Dr. Drew has a lot of insight. In the Adam Corolla era he would rant a lot. In " Celebrity Rehab" you see Dr. Drew at work.
We tend to be attracted to dysfunctional people of the opposite sex. When he was younger Glenn was dating a bisexual girl who declared that she was a lesbian. Glenn was confused and called into Loveline. Adam Carolla told Glenn to get out of the relationship. It was great advice.
After a couple of years, she was trying to get out of a relationship with a girl. She had found out that she had ovarian cancer and that explained the pain she had been experiencing during sex.
Glenn has dated girls with "issues". He wonders why "the insanity" makes girls so much more appealing.
The reason he enjoys Loveline so much is because he learns a lot about himself and it helps him avoid bad situations. It has changed his attitude. People tend to jump in too soon, and too intense, and then when it hits 6 months they begin to wonder what they are doing in the relationship. Now Glenn feels he can make more informed decisions and his priorities have changed.
Glenn stopped eating meat when he realized how a cow becomes steak. He compared this to his enlightenment through Loveline. He does not put himself in the situations he used to put himself in. This is what motivated a lot of the writing about Jonas. Jonas had had an awakening (" Bree's Gone" video):
Jonas: "I've always had problems with being "nice". If you were to ask any one of the...dozens of psychiatrists I've been to, they would probably tell you that it's the result of my needing to overcompensate, which was created by feelings of abandonment when my parents disappeared. Yep...I got issues. Now, I don't know much about psychology but--except for listening to "Love Line" if you wanna count that-- but I have developed a theory, I've kinda pieced one together over the years, and it goes like this: issues are caused by internal conflict and problems are caused by external conflict, which is usually the people around you. Look, I uh, I don't want to make a big deal out of it, but I know I've been fortunate enough to be better off than a lot of people, you know, financially. But when I see someone, you know, who I think is a good person, and it seems like they're struggling, well, I dunno, I just...I just wanna help. You know, and-and especially, if I think I can fix their problems with maybe just a little bit of money, or maybe, a place to crash. You know what, though? As much as I have put myself out there to try to help someone, I-I-I've learned time and time and time and time and time again, that that doesn't necessarily mean that they care about me. Look, I'm - I know that I can't go assigning blame here, and I know I should take responsibility for my own choices...but it really sucks to feel like you've been taken advantage of. 'Kay, so why am I telling you this? Well, we're having a little...Jonas pity-party, because I woke up this morning, went to check on Bree...and she was gone. Also missing was my car, my credit card and, uh, I dunno, like a few hundred dollars in cash. What are you gonna do? I guess I should expect it, you know. That's what I get for offering money and a place to stay to some girl I met on the Internet, right? I dunno though, (the sound of someone approaching is heard) I just, I can't believe that she -"

Glenn used to be more into the superficial. Now, personality and intelligence are very important to him.
If you have had a lot of bad relationships before, and you want to have a good relationship, then do not go out with someone that you are super attracted to. Go for someone you "work well with". When you date the "crazy girl' it appears really good in the beginning, but the person who just seems solid in the beginning will be better for you in the long run.
When Glenn started OpAphid, working on the series became much more exciting than anything else.
His experiences have certainly influenced his writing.

Glenn looked at the LonelyJew15 series the other day and said they have turned out an awesome series of videos.
---
Qthec posted a comment on the blog concerning the pacing of the RedEarth88 videos. The pacing was clearly affected by the technical problems Glenn has discussed previously on the radio show. He acknowledged that no matter what the limitations are people expect quality. He would rather have people be upset about the pace than the quality. "Something that sucks, sucks for eternity".
---
Glenn discussed "Rock Band" and the songs he enjoys on it. He said that it is a much deeper game than Guitar Hero.

I listened to that portion of Glenn's broadcast, and it seemed he might be replying to comments such as the one that I made here on this blog on the last redearth video, saying I wanted to see more "happening" in the story and more "movement." I also have commented since the third of the five videos in the arc, wondering when we would "get a Tachyon video."
As to the second comment, I Glenn did say in an earlier BreeFM broadcast that he would be doing some Rachel point-of-view videos and also some Tachyon point-of-view videos. I still think that's a cool idea - telling the same story from two very different points of view (and presumeably video styles). From what he said tonight, I think this is still Glenn's intention, but that it just was not a part of this particular story arc. It seems Tachyon point-of-view videos may be rarer than then impression I had from what he said prior to this arc of five videos. That's not a problem, just different from what I expected.
As to the first comment, I would like to clarify that by "movement" I do kind of mean action (in that I would like to see Rachel do a little bit more than sit and talk to the camera), and I would like to see a greater variety of settings, but I also mean story movement or complexity / tension - again, I think the story would benefit from tachyon point-of-view conflict that involves bigger/outside forces in contrast to the internal issues that Rachel is dealing with in her point-of-view videos. The two story views could intersect but also reflect/cast light on one another.
Variety within the next arc could benefit the series by attracting more subscribers. But I should emphasize that I am just making suggestions, that I want the series to succeed, and I am also patient to see what Glenn has in mind and what he will produce. I don't expect everything to have a giant pay-off instantly, not at all.
For a couple of examples to go with these comments, see lonelygirl15's "Proving Longitude Wrong" (where Bree mixes blogging to the camera with some music segments, moving around the room, Daniel as a prop, etc.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALm8qZINAXM
An example of a story that contains a lot of movement (granted with probably a huge production budget) are the Sam's five video blogs in LOST's FIND815.com website. (you can seem them on that site under "story so far" and also on abc.com's LOST videos.
These examples are just to provide illustration - I don't expect redearth to be the same as these other stories.
I hope this helps clarify my comments. I can't speak for others, of course.
wow, lot's of typos in that last posting, but too tired/lazy to edit it ;)
