One quotation from the panel that might apply to Lonelygirl15 or other serial shows... Following a statement from Damon Lindelof about the plan to end LOST after two more seasons and the ups and downs of quality in the four seasons so far, Carlton Cuse said beginning at 7:44 of Part 2,

For us it was a huge advantage to get an end date for the show. That really allowed us to turn a corner, and we knew exactly how much story we had left, and that really invigorated Season 4, and it's been very exciting as we plan Season 5 right now.
