Statement From Jenni Powell Regarding TSIY
Dear Community,
I feel it necessary to apologize to you for the events of the past few days. Believe me when I say we went into this as fans. Our intention was to create a series worthy of Lonelygirl15, which we love. Due to a series of misunderstandings and miscommunications between The Misfits team and Eqal, the project simply fell through.
Every day in this town, writers and producers hand pilots to production companies in hopes of gaining their financial backing to create something worthy of their company name. That is what we thought we were entering into, and that is what we poured our passion into. We saw this as an opportunity to work with Eqal to create the next step in the Lonelygirl15 universe, and as such, we hoped Eqal would agree to fund the production in partnership. Eqal saw the prize of the competition as the opportunity to officially lend the Lonelygirl15 brand to our work, whereas, we saw the prize as a paying job we would love to work on. I wish Logan, Will, and I had all the money in the world, so we could produce whatever we wanted without worrying about finances. We simply misunderstood the purpose of the contest, and we regret having to have the matter cleared up this late in the game.
I know some of you are angered by what happened, and to you I truly do apologize. Many of you have become dear friends and you mean the world to me. My only wish moving forward is that we as a community can focus all our energy into supporting The Last team. Their pilot was amazing, and they deserve to get everything out of their victory. I apologize to them if this situation in any way diminishes their success. Our intention was never to take anything away from anyone, and if that becomes the case, I truly am sorry.
Very Sincerely,
Jenni Powell
Jenni, you are made of awesome, and have showed incredible grace throughout this process. Thank you for trying to bring to us an awesome show. I wish the entire team all the best, as I am sure we will be seeing your works in the future. This kind of talent shown by all contributors to this project shines through.
ReplyDeleteThank you, LG15 The Misfits team!
It seems like everyone's good now.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this Jenni. It's good to finally hear your side of the story. Both sides made mistakes and let's hope we all have learnt from this.
ReplyDeleteI hope we can all move on now and enjoy The Last.
i guess jenni wasn't "cricket lee"
ReplyDeletemy comment makes no sense. please disregard humorfail.
ReplyDeleteJenni, you are awesome. As far as we are concerned, this drama is all behind us and this whole community is going to move forward and support The Last. You are a very talented filmmaker and important member of this community and we can't wait to see your pilot for next season of TSIY!!!
ReplyDeleteJenni, Greg:
ReplyDeleteAs a fan of both your works, I just want to say that I am very happy to see that you two have made it 100% clear that it was just an error of miscomunication and there aren't any feelings of resenment with either of you.
I hope the community can move on, support the Last, and be just a bit less "snarl stab hiss" with future things.
Oh no, I have to disagree with Greg. Sorry. But I think you need to take a serious look at TISY and disqualify anyone who has worked for you in the past or present from participating. I think this is where you got into this mess in the first place. If it's a fan creation, then that's what it should be completely. I know that it was exciting to see familiar characters and high production values but I think the line between fan and employee gets too fuzzy and it did upset enough fans who hoped they had a chance to win until they saw the Misfits. Most contests have these exclusions for good reason and I think what happened here is a good example of how it can go so wrong.
ReplyDeleteThough I do think that Misfits was good enough to be a regular LG15 show, not just a contest winner.
anon is probably right, in hindsight, that excluding former employees might be a good idea in the future.
ReplyDeleteGreg specifically said they avoided a clause like that on purpose. Simply put, EQAL and its ancestors aren't the normal kind of company. Like Greg said, they started out by shooting a few videos in a room on weekends with friends and family, and things haven't evolved much since then. Jenni and Logan were fans who were hired as assistants, but they're still fans. They're still part of the community, and I think that's what Greg wanted to emphasize.
ReplyDeleteI think were EQAL went wrong was calling this a contest in the first place. Various States have very specific laws regarding contests and sweepstakes, which create unnecessary complications. Also, as anon1001 pointed out, most contests bar former employees.
ReplyDeleteSince they weren't offering any 'prizes', at least not officially, except for the opportunity to work really hard and be linked on the front page of LG15, they should have classified it as a request for submission, or 'an exciting opportunity or any other made up buzz phrase. The word contest has a specific meaning, which didn't really apply in this circumstance and led to a great deal of confusion.
This whole thing has left a very bad taste in my mouth.
ReplyDeleteI voted for The Last and never felt The Misfits should have been allowed to submit because of their past association. So part of me is glad The Last is now the winner and will get to make further videos.
However at the same time, EQAL has lost even more credibility with me than they have from previous actions.
The way this looks to me is this. EQAL has no money/ideas for a next season of The Resistance. Rather than closing up shop they are turning to the community to keep their baby afloat. The community, in this case The Last does all the heavy lifting to create content and keep the LG15 name out there. While EQAL gets to make deals with companies based on their past successes and viewership figures that have no basis in reality on the number of people who actually watches now.
I'm tired of waiting for promises of things to be fixed. Tired of "misunderstandings" that happen because EQAL is not honest with their intentions on many issues. They get called on it, make a few apologies, get forgiven and then the cycle continues.
If EQAL thinks TSIY can be made with no budget for 8 weeks and we the community will support it, why doesn't EQAL come out with a new season of The Resistance with no/little budget? Go back to your roots. Look at the number of views you get now compared to what you did before you decided to hire so many people and go on locations and increase the cost of each video.
I loved the pilot for The Last but I won't watch it if it's success allows EQAL to continue on the path it has taken.
Mike
I knew I forgot something.
ReplyDeleteJenni in her statement shows once again what a good person she is. While I didn't think The Misfits should have have won, I think Jenni iss incredibly talented and is not deserving of any scorn.
Mike
Jenni is/was a fan of lg15 and I don't think that they picked because she was a employee
ReplyDeletecould Mesh have entered? Jessica Rose ("i'm muthf****n bree, and i'm back!")?
ReplyDeleteseems like a line needs to be drawn next time to avoid this set of squabbles.
I think this is the most gracious thing that's been said or done in relation to this whole fiasco. Certainly more gracious than anything that's come from the EQAL side.
ReplyDeleteJenni, you are a pro in all the right ways. Don't ever forget it.
Milo, wtf is a 'cricket lee'?
ReplyDeleteThe inside industry buzz is that P. Monkey is in negotiations with some very high level Hollywood talent for an entry to TSIY-2. We could not reach the 436 for comment.
ReplyDeleteL.O.V.E will show you the way.
meep
Actually, I heard P Monkey had a 3 picture deal with Miramax in the works, but negotiations were stalled over the nudity clause.
ReplyDeleteGG there was a ridiculously harsh comment left by Cricket Lee on a previous article on this topic.
ReplyDeleteIt was one of the meanest comments I have ever read, and that's saying something.
I heard that P. Monkey was in works to produce a version of LG15 on Broadway. There is no news on whether or not it will be a musical at the moment.
ReplyDeleteSCANDAL! I believe Cricket Lee and Jenni are still in someway connected!
ReplyDeleteFrom Jenni's Twitter:
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY @CrixLee! Hope it's the greatest! Love you!
about 6 hours ago from web"
CRIXLEE!?!?!?!?
Oh yeah.
I heard P.monkey and Owen had hit hard times and were doing gay porn.Probably just a runor
ReplyDeleteP. Monkey is EVERYWHERE
ReplyDeleteP. Monkey will NOT BE STOPPED
P. Monkey is THE RESISTANCE
...Y'know, I think I'd watch that, MM.
ReplyDeleteBut, sadly, you're all wrong.
PurpleMonkey moved to Canada and opened a little brewery and a coffee house. They're both doing pretty darn well. He's currently using the funds to make his mockumentary about a rock-star band of turtles and their crazy manager side-kick, a bear. Owen and Thor are set to star, of course. They stay close like that.
Also: Holy crap, holy crap, its Greg, holy crap!
ReplyDeleteActually P. Monkey is going to star in "How to Get the Perfect Suntan Part 2"
ReplyDeleteIt is true, Cricket Lee is someone I know and is actually a friend of mine. She choose to comment independently of me. I myself told her I felt it was harsh but do not feel it is in my right to censor her and/or ask her to remove the comment if she doesn't wish to do so.
ReplyDeleteI just don't want there to be any speculation that this is some sort of "scandal"...she was just a concerned friend who got a bit too overemotional.
And yes, today is her birthday.
Jenni, I don't think anyone thought that was a scandal. Its just a friend of yours.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Cricket Lee. Eat lots of cake!

ReplyDeleteI <3 you Jenni. I am so sorry this all happened and will not be watching any EQAL-related media from now on* (not just because of all of this. It has been building to this for a long time). I still remain a member of the community because I can. :)
ReplyDelete* Unless P-Monkey is given a role deserved of his talents!
Hehehe, I use the word Scandal a little differently Jenni, sorry ;)
ReplyDeleteI didn't mean it as a scandalous connection or anything like that.
Happy birthday Cricket Lee! :D
Jenni, you are one of the classiest individuals in this community. Thank you for this letter; it's good to hear the story from your end.
ReplyDeleteDon't stop making awesome videos! =D
Glad to see everything ended on a good note! The Last is gonna be awesome and whatever projects Jenni starts up in the future will be as well!
ReplyDeleteI think Eqal and those considering entering shows next time around have all learned from this experience. As long as there is transparency on all sides of the spectrum everything should hitch up quite nicely.
I'm looking forward to seeing what The Last is going to bring us!
The "cricket lee" comment was pathetic and should have been deleted. There's no place for such childish name calling. I've seen other comments removed from the blog, and that's a good example of what should not be allowed.

ReplyDeleteHahahahaha!
After this whole fiasco, these folks seriously think Jenni and company would bother to enter again?
Oh, man. This whole thing has become suddenly clear. That whole company is obviously and irrevocably delusional. Poor saps.
Then just don't watch stuff from Eqal, if it bothers you so much.
ReplyDeletehai peng1
ReplyDeleteBianca, I hope a lot of people take your advice.

BK, there will never be a negative comment removed from this blog when it is aimed at EQAL. EQAL bashing is a big part of this blog, and has been for awhile now.
EQAL following is actually been a big part of this blog. Community unrest is EQAL's fault.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'm one of the Anon's who was very critical of Jenni in the first place. I think my exact words were that she was in bed with the C's. (NOT literally.)
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I'd like to apologize...for any of that that seemed like a personal attack on Jenni. It has been impressed on me that she really is a good person and a worthwhile friend, whereas I was seeing her something akin to the brownosing schemer who takes your promotion...XD So I apologize. I do believe that lines should have been more clearly drawn and terms more clearly stated, however.
...And my comp is running out of battery...so I'll end. I hope to get to know Jenni better and make a better judgement of her than a snap decision.
