TV Ratings: Thursday premieres for 'Southland,' 'Harper's Island' and 'Parks & Recreation'
"The premiere of CBS' "Harper's Island" won the 10 p.m. hour with a 6.7/12, topping the premiere of NBC's "Southland," which had a 6.2/11."
"NBC can be pleased that the new police drama won the hour in the 18-49 demographic with a 3.2 rating and that it improved in its second half-hour. "Harper's Island" fell at the half-hour and failed to equal the numbers "Eleventh Hour" had been drawing in the same slot, though "CSI" was also on the low side as its lead-in."

Ahh ratings analysis where liars figure and figures lie. 2 things to factor in 1) Private Practice was a repeat and 2) hulu had the pilot of Southland up last week. Next week's numbers will be huge. Looks like viewers bailed out a half hour into HI. Will they be back or will there be a significant drop?
More importantly to our interests is what role does HG play? Can they be instrumental in orchestrating a cult phenomenon that can increase ratings?
"At 10 p.m., two dramas launched -- Harper’s Island on CBS and Southland on NBC. Here are the results followed by the observations of note:
Harper’s Island (CBS)
Viewers: 10.49 million (#1), A18-49: 2.7/ 8 (#2)
Southland (NBC)
Viewers: 9.72 million (#2), A18-49: 3.2/ 9 (#1)
The good news for both networks, of course, was the split leadership. But Southland is a better performance and here is why.
1. Growth out of lead-in 30 Rock was 2.97 million viewers and three percent among adults 18-49.
2. Growth in the second half-hour was 540,000 viewers (9.45 to 9.99 million) and six percent among adults 18-49 (3.1/ 9 to 3.3/10).
While certainly not bad, Harper’s Island, in contrast, declined from lead-in CSI by 5.87 million viewers and 27 percent among adults 18-49. And there was a loss of audience at 10:30 p.m. of 1.20 million viewers (11.09 to 9.89 million) and 11 percent among adults 18-49 (2.8/ 8 to 2.5/ 8). That is never a good sign.
Both Harper’s Island and Southland, meanwhile, were down to some degree from recent occupants Eleventh Hour (Viewers: 12.05 million; A18-49: 3.1/ 8 season to-date, based on the final nationals) and ER (Viewers: 10.14 million; A18-49: 3.9/10). But last night’s 10 p.m. winner is Southland."

There has been a fairly steady stream of people signing up at HG since the show aired. I would guess around a total of 1000 by now but perhaps someone over at Anchor Cove has a more exact figure. Now 1000 is good for a site that until recently had under 2000 members but it is too soon to see how the new people will react to the site and it is still way short of the millions who watched HI on TV.
ReplyDeleteCurrently membership stands at around 2511.
ReplyDeleteThere was quite a bit of confusion in chat last night as new members joined HG and did not totally understand the relationship between HG and HI.
UPDATE: 2615
ReplyDeleteUPDATE: 2749
ReplyDeleteLooks like a steady flow of new members at a rate of 35/hr.
ReplyDeleteThe pilot was boring, which explains why ratings dropped after the first half. I'll watch another episode, but it doesn't look like a show I'll keep watching.
