Miles Just Posted the following message on the comment board for "Just Kiss Him Already!"
Hey Everyone,
Well annoyingly "Inside LG15" is down so this is the only place to post. I just want to personally apologize for how crappy the website experience has been here on LG15.com lately. There are a multitude of issues that we are in the process of working through. lg15.com/lonelygirl15 and /katemodern and inside.lg15.com are all hosted on our old servers and are running on an old hacked-together WordPress plus phpBB beast. Those that enter the code rarely return. Yeah, it's bad. So, our fearless developer and sysadmin Sameer is trying to move all the data to our new servers (where lg15.com/theresistance and /thelast and harpersglobe.com are all hosted). Needless to say, it's tedious and complex. I really don't know how long it will take and I apologize. I will keep you posted. Additionally, I know that the version of our software that is running LG15.com is not amazing and has lots of user interface issues and oddness. Needless to say, the newer version (which is running harpersglobe.com) is MUCH nicer and getting better by the day. We are going to update LG15.com to the new software, but it's gonna take some time. I don't know the exact timeline but I'll tell you when I do. I really, really, really, can't wait to update the site and trust me, it drives me NUTS that I can't just snap my fingers and make it so, but that's not how programming works. Or most of life for that matter :)
Anyway, I'm really enjoying "The Last" and I'm super excited to see all the creative things going on in the LG15 community. This thing is my baby and we've been nurturing it for going on two years. Little by little it's growing. I'm sure some of you saw that we announced that we are taking LG15 to Japan. We are VERY excited about this because the money that we made off the deal will allow us to revamp LG15.com and make it MUCH snazzier. Yay!

LG15 is growing?

ReplyDeleteIf you have the resources to have someone work on moving the old stuff to a new server why was that resource not used to correct the few links on the "LG15: The Last" site first? Given that this is an active series should that not have been the priority? And why has that taken so long. Ok, it might not be just simple html but you have a working model with the LG15: The Resistance site which is not an active series. So why not just switch out the resistance links with the last links while that series is still active. How hard would that be and it would at least give TSIY LG15: The Last a fully functional web site for a series they have worked so hard to produce. Don't you at least owe them that much?

You should have thought about how to finance the second season of the Resistance when you wrote the cliffhanger for the 12in12. Now we have a cliffhanger with Reed and DANIEL, but no money to go on. You just should have ended the first season with a real ending, then people wouldn't be asking about a second season so much.

ireactions/bianca: When we wrote the ending to the Resistance we thought we would get sponsors for a second season. Then, the economy collapsed. That made it impossible to get sponsors. At some point in the future we will be able to continue the story of LG15 in the US. All of these international shows and their money will allow us to do that.
"Kind and rational responses" should be given to people who show respect and support to those who show respect and support in return. I guess it's good that at least one person thinks they've been shown that.

ReplyDeleteI guess my only question is why revamp LG15.com and make it "much snazzier" when it has become a virtual ghosttown? I understand the need to make money by doing these foreign projects, but it really isn't doing anything to help foster your relationships with your viewers on your home turf. You are basically driving away the same people who made your projects "famous" in the first place. Perhaps I don't have much of a head for business, but it doesn't seem like a sound thing to do to me.

ReplyDeleteSomeone of us have made websites, some of us have made complex dynamic database driven websites. Please stop saying how difficult it is to make changes. The whole purpose of a dynamic website is to separate data from structure so that you can easily make changes to the structure without affecting the data.
Unless, you have completely restructured the database hooks, simple changes to the front end are an easy, easy matter. Honestly, since yesterday I've been trying to think of what could possibly be taking so long and unless there was some really poor initial implementation, so poor that I can't even imagine what it would be, I can not think of a reason why changing a few thinks would be difficult.
I'm sure you will characterize this a one of those disrespectful comments, please understand I mean no disrespect. I've meeped your shows, I tweet Harper's Island, I promote it everywhere, Heck I even defend you, when you are in the right, at the cove! It brings me no joy seeing people trash you, but you aren't doing yourselves any favors trying to spin things.

Even if your platform was an utterly over-engineered, under-equipped piece of shit, I simply do not believe you it takes several MONTHS to hack in a simple, conditional statement.
Frankly, I think you're lying.
Hell, fact is, the weekly chapter links don't even include the last path, and yet still have the last styling - so clearly, at least some pages have an internal series variable. You want us to believe at a fucking TECHNOLOGY COMPANY, no one manages to write a single conditional statement over a variable that can only have one of a handful of pre-known cases?
Hell, if you wanted it really, really cheap, you could only target the last specifically and put everything for the resistance in the else part. (if(thelast) {the last link;} else {the resistance link;})
This is NOT hard, this does NOT take months. No matter how awful your system is designed.
So as Mathias said: We aren't stupid. Stop treating us like it. If you don't give a shit, if you like the series that make money better, come forward and say so. But quit brushing is off with such obvious bullshit.

I hope this doesn't come across as unreasonable and irrational, but there was no reason for "The Resistance" to end of a cliffhanger. It's not like the network cancelled you. Funding for a second season could never have been a certainty; surely EQAL could have, while filming the first season, also filmed a resolution to the cliffhanger to have in the can in the event of sponsorship failing to come through. Instead, poor Jonas has been hanging from his wrists for quite some time now.
Hell, you could go round to Jackson Davis' house now with a camcorder and film him having escaped, if only to give your audience, whom you claim to care about, some sense of closure.
The unresolved cliffhanger, the god-awful website, the public relations embarrassment with "The Misfits", the dismissal of Crystal Young and turning Sarah evil with no logic whatsoever only highlights the uncomfortable feeling that EQAL's present regime just doesn't care about LG15 or its audience. LG15 was never profitable; it existed only as a labour of love and as a commercial for the talents of its creators. The commericial has resulted in lucrative licensing and development deals. The people who loved the material, however, have left, and without profit, love is the only reason to do a second season of "The Resistance". And I don't see much love for the work when reading these bizarre claims exaggerating the difficulties of website coding. These don't come off as errors of judgement, they look like a lack of caring.
If you like, maybe you can take it as a compliment in knowing that there was a time when you were able to create fictional characters so compelling and vivid that leaving them in their present state feels like a terrible betrayal.
It hurts.
If Miles had just told the truth and blamed 436 people wouldn't be so mad. Come on Miles, admit it. We won't think less of you.
ReplyDeleteOf course there were no visible sponsors for the first season of The Resistance, and Greg has already told us that you all worked like dogs to get sponsors for season 1. Then the views for the resistance were fairly poor compared to historical lg15 highs. e.g., there are many lg15 videos which exceed the total viewcount for all of season 1 of the resistance. So, I just don't see a business case for a season two of the Resistance at this time -- that doesn't mean conditions won't change or that miles' isn't honest in sharing his fervent hope to continue it in the future.

I understand frustration but after so many years you should know that the constant yelling at the creators is not going to fix anything.
I knew Miles wasn't going to get a break from anyone else, and whether or not he deserve sit is not the point. I've said my opinion before, I've been upset at the creators before. I'm just kind of indifferent now.
Just because yelling doesn't fix anything doesn't mean we have to silently take everything.
ReplyDeleteI mean, let's take Miles's response to the link issue - either he's outright lying to us to get us off his back, or his technical staff has been lying to him, making it seem like a simple link change is a a fundamental change in the system architecture.
Either way, he deserves a response - be it to tell him that we're not that stupid, or to make him realize he's been fooled.
Even if yelling doesn't fix anything - neither do the Creators. So if it's going to stay broken anyway, why not at least express our unhappiness?
Staying silent serves only the Creators.
And I understand that, let your opinion be heard, if you're unhappy with something you have every right to say something. I'm not saying that, I am saying that if a few people rationally and validly express their opinion on the issue at hand then people that have the same problem in this case don't all have to jump on the band wagon and start the bickering.

On another note, some issues that people have should be discussed out in the open, but something I always found best? Go to the person them self and express your opinion. If they ignore you behind closed doors, then you have every right to bring it out in an open forum. If only to save face.

ReplyDeleteLet's jump back to the root topic - website outages. It makes a vast difference if a single, random user reports a gateway error, or if dozens of users report errors.
Numbers are telling. It makes a difference whether a single user has an issue, or everybody shares that issue.
Ironically, if you follow that thought further, you arrive at a very interesting conclusion: Right now, I'd say the thing that unites us the most as a community is the fact that most off us are pissed off by the way Cs treat us.
Sure, the way people express it may differ - open criticism, indifference, silent leaving. But the end result is the same: Few people disagree with criticism of the Creators (as evidenced by this very own discussion).
The community is falling apart just as much as it is falling together. Those who break off of the EQAL cheerleader community immediately fall into the (much larger) "WTF EQAL?" community. If you doubt it, look at chat - it's the official LG15 room, and 90% of the time, the majority of people in the room doesn't even watch or care anymore.
We are united in that we all blame EQAL for not being united anymore.
And hell...ultimately, maybe that's for the best of the community?
At least this way, some people stay around - if only to bitch about EQAL. Much better than everyone leaving.

Who wants to see false promises of a new season when the economics clearly aren't there, the motivation and passion for the material is plainly absent from the remaining creators? Who wants to revisit a series where the fanbase has put its loyalties with *former* employees and *former* actors instead of the series?

ReplyDeleteI check this place daily, but I'm indifferent and disconnected to Eqal. The characters I loved are dead and gone. The so-called "C's" have proven themselves to be who they truly are. Most of us have figured it out. That's okay.
But I love this "place". There's so much more than M.G.A.
I enjoy how the people who cared once upon a time still care...but in a different way. And that's the way that matters.
The kids will grow up and join. Because they care too.

I was angsting over my words in this thread. Miles Beckett is a real person. Perhaps I'm being harsh. Perhaps I'm being too cutting. And if LG15 doesn't really spark the creative fires it used to, well, that happens. Sometimes the audience's fondness for the creation is greater than that of the creator himself. And hey, not filming a resolution to Jonas hanging from the ceiling -- we all have lapses of foresight.

And I realized, you know, Beckett will say whatever he can to illicit sympathy and forgiveness and then take the chance to plug his latest pet project. He'll constantly claim that the 593 problems will be fixed 'soon'.
And if "LonelyGirl15" taught me anything, it's to see past charlatans, snake-oil salesmen, and people who play on your wishes and sentimentality to distract you from the fact that they don't care about you in the slightest. (Naturally, I'm referring to the Mesh Flinders version.) Bree, Jonas and Daniel taught some important lessons, about not being fooled by false promises that take no account of facts. About not blanking out unfortunate events by blanketing yourself in someone else's Eternal Song and pretending that it's yours.
It's funny that Beckett and Goodfried called themselves 'The Resistance' in their posts promoting the show, when, if they're anyone, they're the Hymn of One, the Order and Lifesblood Labs.

I have learned now, and I have my opinions straight. I'm not speaking to you as a crazed fan boy who won't let his heroes be beaten down, but as someone who thinks the Creators just deserve a break.
In the past few months, let's be honest, I haven't been one for defending them at all. But this time I think maybe everyone's taken it just a step too far. I mean, sure what they're saying about the website is a bit strange, sure they ended it on a cliffhanger when they had no clue if they could resolve it.
Yes. Those things they did. But you all must remember that Miles is a person too. No matter how much not-so-great things he's done. I'm sure he tries his best for all of you, and I know that we are all probably hurting his feelings a heck of a lot by doing this.

I think the community would be understanding if he just flat out admitted, LG15 isn't a revenue maker. EQAL needs to focus on projects that are. That would be honest. That would be playing straight with the audience to which he owes a large portion of his success.
Instead, in response to the contemptuous cliffhanger and the unprofessional website, we get these ridiculous lies about how it's very very complicated to fix these site issues, and how another season of LG15 will be on its way as soon as the money comes in, really! As though "N1ckola" cash would ever be used on so much as a boom mike for LG15 at this point. It's an insult to the intelligence.
Oh. But "Don't tell." "Miles does his best for us." I guess we all have an Eternal Song.
Bottom Line: Miles may be a person but he is also running a company that derives it's success from the satisfaction of a public audience, which then gets the attention of potential sponsors, which in turn pay him money so that he can survive. He chose this profession of his own free will and therefore has to suffer the consequences if he is doing that job poorly. Especially when he has been given COUNTLESS chances by his audience to fix the problems.

LG15Today is fairly well-known in the New Media world. So if there is anyone to "tell", it's being told.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Miles is attacked as a person, but as the head of Eqal. Well, by me that is. I don't have any issues with him personally, I mean I don't even know him that well. But I do know Eqal and there are a lot of things that can be improved. We as a community just adress those things, so that (hopefully) Eqal will do something about the problems. And if that doesn't happen, or it takes months and months, then we get a bit annoyed.
ReplyDeleteThe crew of The Last has put a lot of effort in their series and they deserve at least a good working website (so with good working links to them and NOT to The Resistance) and a good working forum, where people can discuss puzzles etc. I can't imagine there isn't a good technician to be found in whole California (or the whole US for that matter) who can fix the website problems.
About The Resistance: I still think the people at Eqal should have thought ahead about financing a second season. And because of that, you could have written the 12in12 differently, with a more closed ending.
That's all I have to say.

I was just suggesting that some people may be getting too aggressive with the situation, and should try to calm down a little. I'm not denying you do have a point though.

The The Last link issue was known as soon as the website went up - iirc, that was even before the first video was released.
And I've seen Shi complain about pedia outages for weeks now.
We were nice. We have patiently waited for weeks and months for them to fix things.
Hell, we have patiently waited for weeks and months for them to finally actually implement the changes they announced for the site before The Resistance even started.
The point is not that they make a mistake and we go to kill them right away. The point is that we do patiently wait, and we do give them time, and the end result is EQAL bullshitting us to our faces.
That link issue? The code I posted wasn't a random example. That code, safe for some modification to fit into their system, is really all you need to fix the link issue at least on the The Last main page.
It reads out the path information of the current url, if the path is /theresistance it does stuff, if the path is /thelast it does something else.
We have given them months to code something that is basically a beginners' example.
The thing is not that we can't be calm and rational. The thing is that we have been calm and rational about this website ever since this beta pile of shit was dropped upon us, we have been patient and listened to their promises of improvement "soon" over and over again, and our patience is simply used up.
How long do we have to listen to the bullshit to earn the right to be outraged?

You all are making sense here, and maybe confronting them was the good thing to do. If you never try, you can't fix it. I think I might have been to quick to jump the gun in saying that we shouldn't approach Miles.

Given that we now know it is not that complicated to fix and that fans are not happy about this situation it is just stunning that the central problem on the LG15: The Last site still has not been fixed. One has to ask the question WHY?

Today is April 18, 2009. What exactly is the hold up in fixing this problem Miles? Can you offer us any valid excuse for it still not being fixed?
Okay, lets assume for a second that the bit of code 'gade posted isn't something they can 'fit' into their proprietary software. (Once again making an argument for why one should use an open source platform with a large developer base, but I digress.) There is an even simpler way to fix the problem, just go into the database and manually change the links. It will take more time then 'gade's method, but it is absolutely guaranteed to work. Besides, in reality we are only talking about a handful of links.

ReplyDeleteIf they simply won't bother with The Last because it has only a week or two left to run and doesn't produce income, then that's a valid business decision - it sucks, but it's a valid decision.
But instead of being open and honest, they keep making promises, they keep telling us everything's going to be better, and ultimately, nothing changes.
Is honesty really so much to ask for? It doesn't even cost money!

And secondly, the very notion "they do this for free" is questionable to say the least. Sure, we, personally, don't pay them any money. But why do they have a deal with CBS? Why do they have licensing deals with England, Italy, Poland, Japan? Why do they have five million dollars for investment money?
Solely because they actually have an audience - us. Without us, all they'd have is a web series no one watched and tens of thousands of dollars of debt.
So no, we are not paying them money. But without us being there for three years, giving them a nice community of potential consumers to show off to their clients, EQAL the company wouldn't even exist today.
This could be a nice, symbiotic relationship - they produce interesting content to keep us around, we stay around and generate a lot of buzz, so when the investors take a look, it looks like EQAL is awesome and a safe bet, financially.

ReplyDeleteAnd to look at it a slightly different way, we the fans are in essence non-monetary shareholders in the company. The business that EQAL has garnered and the fanbase they have built was only successful because we jumped on board. The stories were great and what kept us enthralled. But how many hours have we all spent promoting them for free? How many of us have given our friends this "lonelycrack" and gotten them addicted as well?
A few examples from real life of the reasons EQAL should finish one project before moving to the next:
1. When twitter goes down, the "community" is outraged. Not at a person, but a failure of foresight by the managers.
2. When facebook made their ridiculous new ToS, the "community" staged a protest and got the rules changed back.

Here's the thing. The MOMENT anyone makes money off of something, they must IMMEDIATELY realize that they are now SERVING their public. If the public doesn't like what's going on, the public will go elsewhere. That's why people are called sell-outs. (But selling out isn't always a bad thing, despite the connotation.) You make money, you're at the whim of your consumers. You do things right, you get income. You do things poorly, people will no longer pay five dollars for a cup of coffee. That's life in a capitalist society.
Sorry for the long rant. I've had a rough couple of days and thought I may have had something constructive to add to this conversation. Maybe I didn't. You decide.
I still wanna know why they ditched a perfectly functioning phpBB for that unmitigated disaster of a phorum and then had the kind heart to lay off BK?

It appears that the naive EQAL apologists are all but gone and all we have left are those wielding pitchforks.

ReplyDeleteIt's a Greasemonkey script that dynamically switches LG15 Today's header link to http://lg15thelast.blogspot.com/ on pages that either have the last in the path, or have the last in their tags.
It's just a demo, but if you have any problems with it, let me know. Make sure the page has fully loaded before you check the link, so the script was actually executed.
Bet money the C's aren't even reading this.

- The page title actually shows and is informative
- Discussion link links to The Last's section
- Discussion headers for the Last are slightly more specific
- The Last has a favicon

Model is having some problems getting this one to run under Safari - I'll investigate, but I can promise nothing. GreaseMonkey is a Firefox plugin, after all.
The previous version seems to run fine in Safari, though.

in someways i'd like to back up the creators as they strive to make EQAL a world contender in entertainment but the fan backlash just doesnt allow me to understand their process... it upsets me more that if we as an audience where to collect money together specifically to pay for these things to be fixed i think the money wouldn't go to were we have asked. I'm no computer whizz like most of you guys are but fixing things like links being wrong are things I was taught at GCSE information systems to fix as soon as they are noticed. these are mistakes that amatuers make, not companies that get $5 million in funding less that 2 years ago? but hey, maybe i'm wrong.
ReplyDeleteWhat i dont understand is the way season 1 ended. in season 1, 2 and 3 of lg15 we had some sort of closure, they left us looking for more, not begging and praying for anything.
I'll keep logging on hoping for something to have happened, or even changed but i'm loosing patients as the days go by. :(

ReplyDeleteThis is essentially a comment boarders edition. I added some basic bbcode ([i], [b], [s], [size], [list], [url], [img], see post above) and I completely redesigned the comment boards on the episode pages to fit the page better.
Other than that, just some visual tweaks.

Attention: My testers have all gone to bed, it seems. I, personally, did not find any bugs, but this version has not been tested in Safari, for example. As usual: If you find any problems, please report them (I can't fix what I don't know about).

Get it herebtw, for those who haven't seen it yet, bbcode can be seen/tested in action in my test thread once you have the script installed.
I would be happy if somebody with a long nick with spaces (like someone using their real name) could test the new Chat link, to see if the name is properly processed into a valid chat nick.
