Eye on Nicholas Carlton
Nicholas Carlton is a young up-and-coming Melbourne based filmmaker and the creator and director of OZGirl, Australia’s first web series. Nicholas started making films at the age of 10, using a webcam that was connected to his computer (sound familiar?). Nicholas is a self-described internet geek, and fan of American films, especially Robert Rodriguez, who he considers one of his major influences, and like Rodriguez, often shoots and edits his own films.
In 2006, he produced a short documentary titled Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble, which examined the question of whether or not ‘for the public good’ creates an orderly society or an oppressed one. This film was followed in 2007 by Blood and Water a short film about a drought in Australia and resulting break down and civil unrest.
In September 2008, he created the idea of OZGirl, originally as a video blog about a hairdresser. He approached Sophie Tilson (producer, star) about working on the project and the show quickly morphed into a mockumentary about a young Australian girl moving from the country to the big city. OZGirl has been a success with over 20,000 online fans and is available on Bebo, Koldcast, YouTube, and its own channel OZGirl.tv.
OZGirl is an impressive web series. It takes a different approach but still uses the vlog format well when needed.
