GeoCities Homesteaders Left Homeless

Quietly, on April 23, 2009, Yahoo announced that it was closing new registration for GeoCities and encouraged its members to move their pages, preferably to the Yahoo paid hosting service. Yahoo plans to close the site permanently by mid-year. Back in the ‘90’s during the Wild West period of the Internet before MYspace and Facebook allowed anyone who could fill out a profile to create a “website” GeoCities’ site was a very popular choice for those looking to build their first website.

GeoCities was a rapidly growing company when it started in 1995. Sections were grouped around a central theme and named for various cities: for instance, Hollywood for entertainment sites or Silicon Valley for computer related sites. The company provided its homesteaders with various tools to build their sites including message boards, chat rooms, etc. The company went public in 1998 and was subsequently purchased by Yahoo for over 4.5 billion dollars.

Unfortunately, Yahoo’s takeover spelt the beginning of the end for GeoCities. Many users revolted against Yahoo’s terms of service, which stated that Yahoo owned the rights to all content on GeoCity pages. (Are you listening, Facebook?) Furthermore, Yahoo introduced a new feature called a ‘popup’ ad as well as a JavaScript powered watermark, which broke websites and interfered with layouts. Lastly, Yahoo abandoned the policy of organizing sites around the various cities, annoying users. Ultimately, as hosting plans became cheaper and social media alternatives began to emerge, GeoCities relevance quickly dwindled to the point that when Yahoo announced that the site would close, most people did not realize it was still around.

I imagine somewhere out there, a lone web user, whose page has a purple background and a half dozen instances of the blink command is quietly packing up his animated gifs and preparing to move to a new home. Geocities legacy of being many people’s first website will live on, long after the cats those sites were dedicated to, have passed on.

Theres another problem: five apparent strangers wake up in the woods, strange items in the their pockets. Unsure of who, where, or when, they are, they begin to deal with their immediate concern: survival.

Glenn read the script written by the original writer. It involves a heist/robbery but in a different way from the first movie.

Also, remember that Sparky, Robin et al only know what they can know from living on the Island. Whatever YOU have learned from watching the TV show, that is information that they are not privy to. So when Sparky or Robin or Karena or whomever is selective about answering questions, it is most likely because those are the questions they CAN answer. Time is a tough thing to manage here, obviously. And it's confusing to follow. Harper's Globe IS matched up with Harper's Island, but it doesn't feel that way, because HG releases daily content, where as HI is a once a week show. Think about it like this: Harper's Island takes place roughly over a week, about 7-10 days. Harper's Globe will run the till the end of the TV show, so for US that's ten weeks, but for Robin it's 7-10 days.

I found her hanging in her house.

It just doesn't make any sense. I mean, we've dealt with an attempt like this before, especially in the last seven years since what happened to her mom -- and since she said she started seeing him. Everywhere. In the dark, in the light, in the shadows watching her. Kelly was convinced he'd find a way to come back for her... I feel like at some point she wanted him to. But not now. Not recently. She was away from Shane. She wasn't tatting her body with odes to John Wakefield or pictures of her mother's hanging. She was happy. Or at least I thought.

Rocketboom Relaunches with New Host

Caitlin Hill has replaced Joanne Colan as the new anchor of Rocketboom. Rocketboom launched in October 2004, as a daily news program, which quickly grew in popularity and was hailed as the next great Internet sensation (Where have I heard that before?). Joanne Colan herself replaced original Rocketboom host and co-owner Amanda Congdon, who abruptly left in 2006 after a dispute with fellow co-founder and current Rocketboom producer Andrew Baron. Originally inteneded only to be a substitute host, Colan's wit and sexy British accent proved popular with Rocketboom's audience. Colan announced last week that she would be leaving Rocketboom to follow the always vague 'other pursuits.' Apparently, filming a 3 minute video a day leaves little time for other things.

Caitlin Hill stepped in as the new host on Monday. Hill an Australian native living in New York, I guess Andrew Baron likes his girls with accents, began her rise to Internet fame by posting her first video in response to an episode of lonelygirl15, in August 2006, and subsiquently went on to become one of YouTube's most popular vloggers.

WELCOME TO "INSIDE THE HARPER'S UNIVERSE"

So as you can see, we have created an “Inside” page to HarpersGlobe.com. This section is designed to take you behind the scenes of the Harper’s Universe. As one of the Executive Producers of Harper’s Globe, I will be your ‘tour guide’ of sorts. Each week we will be looking to feature blogs, stories, pictures and videos from different members of our cast and crew. We have a very passionate, hard-working, talented crew and I’m excited for you to connect with everyone and follow the journey we took together in creating this project. As well, Dan Shotz, one of the Executive Producers of Harper’s Island, will be on hand to take you behind-the-scenes of Harper’s Island.

It has been a pretty amazing experience putting together the show and this website over the past 9 months. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the response, discussions, and interactivity taking place here. My hat is off to all of you. In just a few weeks time, your passion, observations, and authentic voices have created a palpable, growing community. You are the heart and soul of this universe. So thank you all for your time, creativity and participation.

Well most of it is behind the scenes. We've fixed several bugs (and hopefully not created any new ones) and tweaked performance in a couple of areas. From what I can tell there are no new "features" though. Sorry :p

There is some slowness with one of our updates. By slowness I mean actual slowness. It takes a long time to do. We don't think it should take as long as it's taking. That's what we're working on now. When that is done, and we do one more practice run, we'll be updating the site. Most of the changes won't be all that visible to you except in the form of improved stability and readiness for some new features coming up ahead beyond this update, but off the top of my head you should be able to see:

1) *crosses fingers* no more craziness with notifications (extras being delivered, random amounts on your dashboard)

2) ajax deleting of notifications. hopefully this will make it easier for you to manage the notifications on your bar.

3) pm clarification. looks a little more like email now. we know it's weird on the sent side, but we're looking into it.

4) improved stability across the site, so hopefully we won't brb so often and there will be less slowness when everyone comes at the same time.

The mystery of the bear trap accident. (Harper's Globe)

A lot of attention on HG comments has recently been focussed on the "bear trap" article that recently appeared in the archive.

ANTIQUE BEAR TRAP CAUSES DEADLY ACCIDENT

A car accident on State Route 530 outside of Arlington killed 3 people early yesterday morning. The cause of the accident was an antique bear leg trap left on the road. The victim’s names have not yet been released to the public. Sources say the victims were two males and one female in their early twenties. Police are investigating this as a possible manslaughter. The bear trap was set in the middle of the West bound lane on a blind corner of Route 530. Washington State Patrol Trooper, Duane Roberts said, “It would have been impossible for the driver to see or avoid the bear trap.” According to the police report, the car was moving at approximately 50 mph when it hit the trap, blowing out the front tire and forcing the vehicle to strike a nearby tree. The trap must have also hit the gas tank because it did not take long for a leak to lead to an inferno with the car exploding into flames.

All animal traps have been outlawed in Washington State for the past 8 years and the one found has not been used in a hundred years. Authorities have no motive behind the possible manslaughter and some believe this could have been a prank that had gone horribly wrong. State Troopers will begin questioning people in the surrounding area as well as in Arlington. State police are asking the public for any information regarding the accident.
