Under proposed legislation, White House could be given an Internet “kill switch”

Known as the “Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act”, the legislation would cause all US-based Internet service providers to “immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed”.

  1. I can see where this would be usefull. When a company comes under attack and can't figure out how to stop it. Sometimes it is better to kill the link, figure out how you are being attacked and how to block it and then put the link back up. But this is only in worst case scenarios where the attack is worse than being "off the grid" for a prolonged period of time. And this happens more times than companies admit to. For a worst case scenario like this to happen for the entire US, it would have to be really bad. Die Hard 4 bad. And at that point "killing the link" for the entire US won't really make much of a difference to everyone else, we will already be down anyway.

I guess the real problem people have is that the government will have this control. I look at it this way. They already have control of nuclear bombs. We're screwed either way.
