Steve Burton Jumps To Y&R....

Last week news broke that Steve Burton has signed with the Young and the Restless and will play Victor's 'partner', according to a tweet by Nancy Lee Grahn.

It has been a little over 2 months since we last saw Steve grace our screens, and when it was announced in late August the popular actor planned to leave, fans were reeling. Initially the actor stated he wanted to move from Los Angeles to Nashville to raise his young family in a rural setting vs. big city.

Upon learning Steve is making the jump to the long-running CBS daytime drama, fans took to twitter in a frenzy, with some feeling it to be a betrayal. Others blame the new regime at General Hospital, Executive Producer Frank Valentini and Head Writer Ron Carlivati, for Steve's decision to leave after 21 years on GH.  I completely disagree with that statement.
As some fans know from Steve's events, he was very vocal about his disdain for the direction of his character over the past several years. In the last couple of years the previous regime continued to desecrate not only Steve's character, but also Maurice Benard's, and fans were screaming to bring back the real Jason Morgan/Sonny Corinthos.

In my opinion, recent storylines really played a part in Steve's decision. While the buzz that film star James Franco joined the cast as a special guest in 2009 was exciting for fans, the story though initially intriguing, had taken a dark turn by September 2011. Franco sexually assaulted Sam as a helpless Jason watched...on their honeymoon! This was completely opposite what the character was supposed to be and it really did not sit well with fans. Next up- who's child is Sam carrying? Franco's or Jason's? DNA switches, Jason's refusal to accept the baby...seriously? Of course who could forget the tragic storyline of his son Jake's death? It was taxing on the entire cast and fans were in an uproar over that storyline. Then, if some recall this time last year they planned to make Jason the hooker stalker/killer, happening during "blackouts" due to his brain injury.  I've learned that behind the scenes Steve was very upset by this. During a fan event he stated he didn't even recognize his character any more. One of the things Cartini did immediately was drop that storyline, as well as clean up several others in preparation of resetting the show.

On the social media circuit I was dismayed to see fan wars again flare up between Jasam (Jason and Sam) and Liason groups (Liz and Jason).  Most are touting the integration of 3 contract One Life To Live characters added to the GH roster as the reason for Steve's decision.  I disagree with this as well.

Cartini has successfully brought back several popular GH veterans with main storylines focusing on the shows' 50 year history. Our favorite villains have returned effectively bringing past storylines fans loved to the forefront. I could understand the upset if the integrated characters were taking over or if the storylines were all about OLTL, but they're not! Nor have they been! Frank and Ron have turned a show around that was truly on the brink of cancellation, in less than a year and instead of enjoying what we are seeing fans continue to find fault.

Another topic of conversation on the net is how Steve was brought to Y&R. Some believe it was at the expense of other favorites, let go by Jill Farren Phelps.
Obviously when it was announced Jill Farren Phelps was taking over as Executive Producer for the Young and the Restless I was a bit surprised.  Upon taking the reigns several changes were made immediately.  History repeated itself as voices of fans reached a fevered pitch learning their favorite Cristal Kahlil had been fired.  They rose up and rallied to get her rehired...which they did! Another upset was seeing veterans Genie Francis and Stephen Nichols unceremoniously fired, as well as key staff, which some say was in preparation to bring in Steve Burton.
While this could be true, please remember...THIS IS A BUSINESS!!!  Everyone that is associated with soaps behind the scenes knows this. Things happen and we have to roll with the punches. Soaps are very different in that they continually revamp over the years, as people come and go, the industry changes.  Personally I think it's a smart move by CBS and Sony Pictures since ratings for the Young and the Restless have plummeted. They know Steve has a HUGE fan base and want to capitalize on that.
Ultimately I feel it was time for Steve to make a change and as his fan, I am very happy for him. All of us on RHeart wish him the best of luck in the New Year and we look forward to seeing him on our screens again. Though we miss him on GH, he will never be forgotten! Thanks for the memories, we love you Steve...

♥Prospect Park Rattles The Cage...AGAIN!

On December 17, 2012 soap fans were riled up with the news Prospect Park, who failed to deliver cancelled ABC drama's One Life To Live and All My Children via online, appears to have reached an agreement with the Screen Actors Guild/American Federation of Television and Radio Arts (SAG/AFTRA), and the Directors Guild of America (DGA).

After ABC announced the beloved daytime serials were being removed from their daytime line up, Prospect Park's Jeff Kwatinez and Rich Frank promised the iconic serials would return via its' online network.  The company had licensed both shows from ABC/Disney, but negotiations with the Unions SAG/AFTRA, DGA and WGA broke down.  Fans were outraged when the news spread that the whole thing fell apart and the cast and crews of both shows had no idea what happened.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, an agreement with the unions that govern actors and directors was finally forged, with both serials set to begin production as soon as the first quarter of the new year.

While this is great news for the soap genre as a whole, for me I'll believe when I see it.  One of the most important elements in the new venture is securing writers via the Writer's Guild of America, that at this point has not yet occurred.  Another hurdle concerns the deal made by Prospect Park, which has elected not to comment at this time about the agreement.  Reports are the company is currently in talks with numerous actors, however many have moved on to other projects.  Now that ABC appears to be clearly in support of a hybrid of General Hospital and One Life To Live, question is who is still available, willing to take the gamble to make the jump online?
I've learned that although the initial plan to migrate to the web collapsed, Kwatinez and Frank continued their quest and put together an investor package, then spent the summer shopping it around.  It is still unclear exactly who is potentially backing the project or if they'll be able to deliver two major daytime dramas based on the financial model presented.  What a lot of fans don't realize is the tremendous amount of money it costs networks to produce a show like One Life To Live- upwards of $35-50 million per year. The biggest obstacle across the board in the online arena is funding. While Prospect Park has enjoyed success with USA Network's Royal Pains and FX Network's Wilfred, those are produced for cable networks. Translating two large, major soaps like OLTL and AMC is a huge undertaking for release online.
Another issue is the fact that Frank Valentini, currently Executive Producer on General Hospital had been named as the EP, set to be the driving force once OLTL moved to the web.  Will this still be the case should it return to production?  If so, where does that leave General Hospital?  Under Valentini and Head Writer Ron Carlivati General Hospital was once again, brought back from the brink of extinction as it was in the late '70's when Gloria Monty took the reigns.  ABC stood behind Monty as she rebuilt the show, making it a household name worldwide.  Will ABC continue to support the iconic soap and keep their longest running drama in production should Kwatinez and Rich solidfy the deal?  If so, will Cartini remain with General Hospital or is it possible another regime will take over?  It all remains to be seen.
In my opinion it would be foolish for ABC to eliminate GH from its' daytime line up.  Since the dynamic duo Cartini turned things around, TV by the Numbers listed GH is the No. 1 daytime serial for the fourth straight week in a row and has garnered higher ratings than Katie Couric's talk show in the all important 18-34 women demographic, even with Katie's show in the coveted 3:00 p.m. time slot.  She has enjoyed her ratings in large part due to GH's lead-in, and it would be in her best interest to ensure it stays.  ABC is also currently No. 1 in daytime programming for the 13th week in a row, so why would they want to change their line up now?
Ultimately I think soap fans should take the news of Prospect Park's possible venture with a grain of salt.  I am cautiously optimistic, but would encourage fans to continue supporting the remaining four network daytime serials- General Hospital (ABC), Days of Our Lives (NBC), Young and The Restless (CBS) and The Bold and the Beautiful (CBS).  Focus on how fun it is to watch our soaps again and just enjoy what we have now versus what may or may not come to pass.  Continue to support the entire genre as a whole by making sure your viewership counts!  Please DVR each episode or watch online at ABC, CBS or NBC.  Also check in on GetGlue when watching your favorite shows as they track viewership which added to the Nielsen Ratings.    Also take a moment to send out easy tweets in support of our soaps via Save The Soap Genre.

Through all the ups and downs this past year, one thing remains true- soap fans really are the most loyal audience and the fact that OLTL and AMC could be resurrected is solely due to fan's passion for their soaps!

What does it take to make a "viral video"?

Today Gangnam Style passed 1,000,000,000 views on Youtube.

http://www.webseriestoday.com/2012/12/gangnam-style-hits-1-billion-youtube.html

Ironically it did so on December 21, 2012, the day the World was supposed to end.

http://www.webseriestoday.com/2012/12/welcome-to-end-of-world.html

We all know how difficult it is to get views for content (unless you are one of the few that simply buys them), so the question is: how does a video go viral?

Content is king

To say the content itself must be great goes without saying. But beyond that you need the video to leave a profound impression on the person viewing it. A video should grab the attention of the viewer in the first 5-15 seconds. It then needs to draw them in with interesting content. It should then prompt the viewer to desire to make the video "part of their World". Finally, the video needs to cause the viewer to take action and motivate them beyond the passive experience. These are simply the classical steps of any sales process:

• get attention
• develop interest
• build desire
• close/take action

Seeding the viral process

If you share a video with one person and that person shares it with 10 people who then go on to share it with 10 people each you have 100 views already. Clearly if this process keeps repeating itself you will quite quickly have 1 million views. The problem with this model is that it assumes each person will share it with 10 people. If they only share it with 1 person the process slows down remarkably. Worse still, if at least some of the people share with no one you have a lot of "dead ends" that essentially stall the viral process.

One way to get around this, which is quite obvious, is to share the video with more people. The more people you can "seed" the video with the faster your views will grow. The problem here becomes one of low share rates and dead ends. A dead end can wipe out an entire chain of potential views. A low share rate can drastically slow down the viral process.

You can attempt to overcome these effects with sheer numbers, by engaging with so called "influencers". An influencer is a person with a large social media following who has sufficient trust from their "following" to be able to motivate them to action. The influencer can not only seed your video with a large number of people, but they can also prompt them to action. The problem with this strategy is that their influence generally only applies to the first person influenced in the chain. Subsequent shares will be dependent largely on the content, and without the push from the influencer you may end up with a low share rate or worse, a large number of dead ends in subsequent shares.

Creating "shareable content"

The final factor that contributes to a video going viral is the "shareability" of the content. This factor comes in many forms. If a video is shorter it maybe more shareable than a longer video, but the key factor is the impact the content has on the viewer, how quickly the video leaves an impression, and how likely that impression is to cause the action of sharing.

It is not good enough to be good; that may only lead to passive viewing! The video needs to have hooks that evoke the "need to share". Having the viewer simply enjoy your video is one thing, but when they are compelled to share it with a friend that sets in motion an entire potential chain of events. If they are compelled to share it with even more friends then so much the better. When the viewer "takes ownership" of the video it becomes part of "their World" and when it does so, they want to share it with their friends.

So, the question you should ask is "what makes this video shareable". Just because you think it is good does not make it shareable! When we share we are making a statement about ourself, what we personally like and what we think specific of our friends will like. The best sharing is highly personal in the sense we trust the person sharing the information based on a series of prior interactions. People will not share content if they think it will damage that trust. On the other hand people will share if they believe the content shared will improve their standing with the recipient. What we share can often determine how we are perceived.

http://www.webseriestoday.com/2012/12/self-perception-digital-age.html

Conclusion
By creating great content, seeding it in the right places, and ensuring that the content has the right hooks to be sharable, we can probably improve the chances that a video will go viral.

What do you think it takes to make a video go viral?

WELCOME TO THE END OF THE WORLD

From Wikipedia:

The Maya calendar is a system of calendars used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and in many modern communities in highland Guatemala and in Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico.

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_calendar

The 2012 phenomenon comprised a range of eschatological beliefs according to which cataclysmic or transformative events would occur around 21 December 2012. This date was regarded as the end-date of a 5125-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Various astronomical alignments and numerological formulae have been proposed as pertaining to this date, though none has been accepted by mainstream scholarship.

A New Age interpretation of this transition was that the date marked the start of time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 21 December 2012 would mark the beginning of a new era. Others suggest that the date marks the end of the world or a similar catastrophe. Scenarios suggested for the end of the world included the arrival of the next solar maximum, an interaction between Earth and the black hole at the center of the galaxy, or Earth's collision with a planet called Nibiru.

Scholars from various disciplines dismissed the idea of such cataclysmic events occurring in 2012. Professional Mayanist scholars stated that predictions of impending doom are not found in any of the extant classic Maya accounts, and that the idea that the Long Count calendar ends in 2012 misrepresents Maya history and culture, while astronomers rejected the various proposed doomsday scenarios as pseudoscience, stating that they conflict with simple astronomical observations.
