New Web Series Coming Soon!

Hey everyone, this is Jenius Productions letting you all know about a new web series we have in production right now! It's called Death As We Know It. 


Death As We Know It is a comedic web-series following the lives (or deaths, rather) of three recently deceased ghosts spread out between two households. Not only do these ghosts have to deal with the human problems of the people they now haunt, but they also have to discover what it takes to move on from purgatory and figure out how to live even in death.


The show stars Daniel Eachus, Diego Parada, Tyson Pestner, Ryan Driscoll, Sarah Buster Brooks, and Ryan Phillips as well as having a whole slew of guest stars!


We are currently half way through production and look to air our first episode in May of this year. Each episode will be roughly five minutes long and jam packed with laughs!

Social gaming companies are trading points for your attention. By watching a video you get to advance in the game.

Brand advertisers want organic views and that can only be achieved via targeted audiences. They want to know how they will get a return on your investment.

Paid media buys: 2 types. One view based only. One that assumes that you will get organic growth on top of the paid views.

It helps to have power players like MC Hammer involved in the video. There has to be a plan and extra money to get views. Use Twitter, Press, Youtube True view, Facebook strategies. Target your audience. Used Ed Lee promo video as an example. Targeted local news paper first. Spread to DC and then returned to San Francisco. Media planning is what counts.

Every great platform eventually becomes dominated by those with the money to promote. Only a few of the low budget productions will survive in this environment. You always need to be one step ahead. For example: King of the web which supports content that is not always PG.

The king is the viewer. Our "eye balls" are valuable. Natural engagement is valuable and brands are trying to figure out how to do it. They need to give more than just a commercial because the scales have tipped.

Brands do not really "get" a lot of the content on the Web. The medium is not a good fit for brands, so even when they come with all their money the people who are good at content still have an advantage.

KPI = key performance indicators.

You "juice things" to get them started.

TheWillofDC asked what to do if the video gets taken down for "illegal views" on YouTube.
Answer: The brand will not be surprised when the video gets taken down because they already know all the details. It does not violate YouTube TOS and Youtube actually encourages it.

Having gone to art school in NYC and currently being an artist there, most of my friends are, well...artists.  And as performers, directors, writers, etc...  many of them have discovered the wonder of the web series. As has been said, it's an amazing way to get your work out there.  Making a webseries is pretty much the #1 way to make your own work and get people to watch it.  Unfortunately, many of the people making these web series don't really have the advertising "know how".  I mean, yes, they manage to do pretty well fundraising on sites like Kick Starter or Indie-Go-Go, but often their main supporters are friends, family, and people they went to school with.  And with IMDB having such stringent rules on how to get a web series on the database, let alone not even having a category for them (The Guild is listed as a TV series), and honestly, not many festivals geared toward the new medium, a lot of really great work goes with under 1000 views.

So, for my first blog entry, I present to you my top 3 favorite web series that have under 1000 views.  Here's the thing about these productions.  While produced to get oneself "out there", these series are good.  Despite the low production value, the writing is strong as well as the performances.  So, give 'em a watch!

In No Particular Order:

1) Team Allies! http://www.youtube.com/user/DieHardRedShirts?feature=watch: recommended for the quality of the general production value (especially for it being low budget) and the awesome comedic performances.  Also, the off -beat dialogue is fun, and I like how I'm not quite sure where it's going, but trust it will go somewhere.
2)Apartment Comedy http://www.youtube.com/user/ApartmentComedy?feature=watch recommended for the natural flow of the writing, despite the ridiculous things the characters are saying, the weirdest social time to reference The Lion King, and the great comedic performances of the actors.
3) Morning Cup http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udHv8JMPCbw: recommended for subtle yet strong characters.  Also, just the sheer awkwardness.

The YouTube Revolt: Why Google is wrong.

On March 7, 2012 Google will force all YouTube users to use their new design. The design has been acclaimed by some to be more stylish and less cluttered. However there have been many protests against the new design. In fact, if you take a look around some of the top YouTube channels many have not adopted the new format. This should tell Google volumes. If you test out a new design and many of your key users fail to adopt it, let alone endorse it, then it suggest you have a problem. Clearly something is missing from the new design.




There are probably many opinions on what is wrong with the new design and what Google should do about it. One of the most obvious is that the new design stilts some of the "social" that has helped YouTubers to reach celebrity status. "Social" is one of they key components of any Web Series. It is part of what makes them powerful and different. Perhaps it should not be a shock to Google when they interfere with such a key dynamic on their site.

At this point it does not look like Google will back off on this forced switch. That is a shame. If this fails to happen then one can only hope that Google will quickly move to repair some of the damage by creating more flexible templates that give their user base some of the features they have come to depend upon.
