Understanding Communities

Many people do not think of online communities as "real World," This is often a huge and costly mistake in the context of Web series "marketing." The only difference between online and off is that the way you behave online can make a radical difference but it can be much less clear why it makes a difference if you are simply looking at the online community as an inert Web page, not a "living breathing entity."

The Web series World is filled with creative people who have worked amazingly hard on their projects. They think of their projects as special and hence deserving of an "audience," All too often that audience, at least in the numbers desired, remains illusive. This can be frustrating for sure. However, the response to this frustration is all too often disastrous.

Web series "experts" often recommend that creators find online communities that would logically fit their target demographic and promote their series to those commutities. Makes sense, right? Now and again, a creator will be in the right place, at the right time, with the right series, and all goes well. This feeds into the notion that approaching a community is easy. Is it? Probably not. All to often creators migrate from community to community trying to promote their series without any genuine interest in being a participant. This can get you noticed, but not always in a good way.

Think about real World communities. How would you react if someone came to your community, knocked at your door and tried to sell you a product? This may once have been a viable model, but today the door is likely to be slammed in your face with the same rejection that telemarketers often receive when they interrupt your favorite TV show.

There are a few problems here. The "sales process" is a delicate one and today's consumer has their radar set on high alert for a sales pitch. That is why they often do not react well to "cold posts," no matter how polite they may be written. The second problem is that it takes time for a community to become comfortable with a new entrant. People want to get to know you, but if you approach them with what is essentially a sales pitch, you come across as someone with an agenda; not someone who wants to genuinely participate in a community.

Communities are intrinsically open to those who authentically want to engage with other members. Communities are open to those who want to invest in the community and make it a better place to exist.

What to do? Well, often the best approach is to carefully study the community you are interested in. Get to know its participants, its conventions, and learn how things are normally done. Everyone enjoys an introduction when it seem sincere, but they will reject an introduction that is merely a "sales pitch." Next become familiar with the content that has recently been posted in the community. Most likely you found the community because you had a shared interest, so if your intentions are "honorable" that should be no problem. Take "baby steps" deeper into the community by commenting on existing posts and doing what you can to spark off a conversation with other community members. Next, begin to share information that seems pertinent to ongoing conversations. Make your presence felt, but in a way that feels organic to the community. Yes, all of this takes time and patience, but as the old expression goes: "no pain, no gain".

At this point the community will begin to accept you as "one of their own." When you feel you have been "accepted" by the community, you will find that when you begin to post your own creative content people will treat it as "home grown" and be much more receptive.

There is no magical formula for all communities. Each community, online or off, has its own "personality" and may require a slightly different approach. However if you approach an online community with the same respect and enthusiasm to participate that you would for a new "real World" community you are off to a good start.

Do you have any community tips you would like to share?

Turning on a Dime

Did you ever have one of those days that just would not end....where you work all day and don't feel like anything was accomplished.  Where you are checking your email every 45 seconds hoping for some good news?  Checking your phone every two minutes to make sure that you had not missed "the Call."

That was me this Monday.  A lot of things were put into motion last week, and others had been in the works for some time. Now we were playing the waiting game.  It didn't help that I was caught up on all of the work from our paying clients and had no looming deadlines to distract me.  And it didn't help that after several days of working on a project, I realized that I was back to the drawing board.  But even Mondays can't last forever.  And while Monday gave me a dim outlook of the rest of the week, Tuesday started a turnaround.  We received news that our State Development Office is including a story about us in their materials that go our this month.  And we got news that we will be featured at Balticon 47.  This Sci-Fi convention takes place Memorial Day weekend in the DC/Baltimore area.  And is great news for us, because Shotgun Mythos will be featured Friday Night on the big screen!

Several other things are in the works...but a glowing review on YouTube for the newly posted Episode 6 seems to cement the upswing this week has taken.

I am optimistic that the phrase "best episode to date" will continue to repeat itself as this series progresses. Thumbs way up for the entire cast who shine in an exceptional episode that is brimming with tension, excitement, action and crisp and award worthy editing by Clint Gaige. Robbie Whiplash's score continues to add a grand tone to it all.

My Ruined Life: Trailer 2 (Season 2)

My Ruined Life: an original, comedy Web series starring Brian Cowden, Nathan Holt, Kristen Egermeier and Greg Bailey. Friends Brian and Nate relax on various city benches after work, discussing theories about their "ruined" lives. Maybe one day they will decide on one of them an move along.

My Ruined Life: Life is full of theories and benches. When your life is ruined, you sit on a lot of them.

My Ruined Life was recently named BEST WEB SERIES SHOT IN PHILLY & AUDIENCE FAVORITE (WEB SERIES) by FirstGlance Film Festival 2012 (Philadelphia).

Juggling a Web Series

Ok, keep your eye on the balls….around and around they go, and if we work real hard, they might all stay up in the air!

Ball #1:  Filming:  Schedules are done, casting and recasting is complete, and we are midway through the filming of Season 1.  Nearly every weekend between now and the first of June is tied up with shooting the rest to the show

Ball #2:  Production:  After the paying work is complete on the weekdays, the remainder of the day and evening are tied up in the editing process.  Editing, uploading so Robbie can create his awesome score, re-editing to add in the score, re-uploading to get it ready for release.  Securing props, locations and sets for next weekend’s filming.  Then on to the next episode where we repeat the process.

Ball #3:  Promotions:  I mentioned that nearly every weekend is tied up filming?  The ones that are not are tied up with events.  We will be hitting the Sci-Fi Convention circuit this spring, and having a great time at it!  And in between all the rest, we are arranging radio interviews, submitting info for print coverage, and in general spreading the news of Shotgun Mythos to the world.

And juggling 3 balls proficiently is pretty entertaining to watch, so let’s see what happens when we toss in another one…

Ball #4:  It is high time we got started writing Season 2! Midway through the shoot on Saturday, Clint had that EUREKA moment, and we knew where Season 2 was going to begin, and which characters we were going to make miserable in the process!  So Sunday I wrote the vlogs that bridge Season 1 and Season 2 and Clint just sent me over the first webisode of Season 2.  And while Season 1 is a dark and gritty crime story, Season 2 makes it look like sunshine and rainbows in someone’s happy place.  Yikes!

Oh, and just for good measure…let’s toss in one more…

Ball #5:  Casting:  A new season means new cast members, so somewhere in the middle here we will have to find the poor souls who will entrust their character’s lives to us!

And all of this on top of juggling full time jobs and families.  So if you are considering launching a Web Series, know that it is one of the most fun and exciting endeavors in the world, but it takes tons of focus, dedication and persistence to keep all of the balls up in the air.  Hopefully someday (soon) we will be good enough at juggling all of this to make it look easy!!

The Stink-Eye & Back Alley Shame - OJBG 6.01 Recap

The beloved webseries "Orange Juice in Bishop's Garden" is in its 6th and final season! The final episodes will be airing soon, so we thought we'd catch you up and what's happened since Season 4 up to where we are now in the series.

We now find ourselves smack in the summer of ’97. Fashions are starting to turn against us. The Spice Girls are spreading their evil and things are just generally spiraling into that Millennial state of Totally Haywire. And Sarah has decided to start a BAND– no more of this solo “singer songwriter nonsense”. But the band has to take a backseat as heartbreak takes center stage.

Things are looking not so fresh for Sarah, who despite her best Lisa Frank moments, (umm there were mermaids involved…mermaids I tell ya!?) didn’t see the writing on the wall vis-a-vis her relationship with Gwen. Yes, Gwen broke up with Sarah, via this new thing called AIM. The ignominy of being dumped is bad enough, but add the ignominy of being dumped impersonally by someone who goes by the alias angelbabyxxcakesxx…??? It’s sure to leave you in a totally depressed and adrift state for the next few months. Thankfully Sarah came out to her mom, so she can actually, you know, openly be f-ing miserable at home. Nonetheless, it’s all pretty bad/sad/mad, and not so rad.

But misery loves company. Alex was also just dumped by her very sweet (anyone remember Team Davis?) boyfriend, who, rumor has it, is gay and having a great sexual awakening. He just sent her a “Live Long and Prosper…Without Me” letter. Gee, thanks.

Chloe’s ship has finally sailed home – her fiance, Adrian, is now back from bootcamp. But if absence makes the heart grow fonder, this proximity is killing things. Claustrophobic Chloe, the moping Alex and Sarah duo, and this new girl Cass all circle each other in their weird ritual dance of teen misery.

The shakedown is that Chloe and Sarah make some teen magic, don Frida Kahlo unibrows, and walk off into the sunset… and into each others beds. Chloe even whispers this sweet nothing into Sarah’s ear: “You can call me Gwen if you want.” Yea. This is HEALTHY. And this is where Season 5 ended.

And this is were our recap of Ep. 6.01 (Summer of ’97 Continued) begins!

It starts all sweetly enough. We see a newly showered Chloe kissing the bare shoulder of a slumbering Sarah in her bed (well, actually it’s Gwen’s bed, but that’s not weird). Then the doorknob starts rattling… Sarah thinks it’s someone breaking in, but Chloe offhandedly scoffs that it’s probably just Adrian – you know, her fiancee. Sarah shoots her a panicked look, as though she has finally glimpsed Chloe’s madness and realized that she’s helpless against it. Sarah switches between nervous giggles and visibly distraught as Chloe tells her to follow her lead, and not be so jumpy and make them look guilty. This (understandably) gets Sarah all confused… “but we are guilty.”

This girl is fearless (…or just begging to be caught?) Without giving Sarah a chance to bolt to the bathroom and cover up, Chloe opens the door to Adrian. “Heyyy, lover!” quickly turns into “Are you kidding me?!” when Adrian sees Sarah naked in the bed. Yup. She’s cheated on you, with a girl (added emphasis for the double injury his male ego has probably just endured). With all his might, he gives Sarah the ultimate stink-eye. Let’s just call it the Epic Stink Eye of Insanity.

No need to worry though, we all know Chloe is an INSANELY good liar. She turns the tables on him – his possessive, jealousy trip is not becoming. Would she really do serious irreparable damage to their relationship?? Nuh-uh. And this is how she effortlessly convinces him that this is just how normal hetero slumber parties look – they definitely all include naked pillow fights and a nice thick aroma of morning shame — no biggie. So Adrian leaves, feeling slightly more at ease, but still giving Sarah the hairy eyeball.

Chloe comes back to bed. “See? All taken care of!” like she’s just finished doing the dirty dishes or some other menial task. This is all too weird for Sarah, who scrams, still naked, into the gross old alley. But do we really feel bad for Sarah as she morosely takes the walk of shame? I mean, did she really forget that Chloe’s fiance was still in the mix? Was she really not weirded out about being in Gwen’s apartment with another girl? Really?? ZOMG Rebound relationships…
