How do you judge the success of a Web series?



How do you measure the success of your own show?  Do you judge other people's shows by:

  • Views
  • Likes
  • Followers
  • Whether or not they got a Comedy Central deal

I know art isn't measurable, but oddly enough ... in the Internet age we have counters on everything.  So tell me what you think of these ... or tell me if none of them matter, and you only care about the artistic gesture.

And it's absolutely fine to plug your own show as part of the discussion.

      Smooth plug, CritHit. But what if someone said "You have less than 200 views and less than 300 likes, so I'm not gonna take you seriously?"

      What I'm trying to get a sense of is if people use the numbers to measure themselves and judge others.

    Numbers, engagement, the ability to monetize independently and the ability to build your own brand are my measurements of success. The web is a completely different medium from TV and so network deals mean nothing to me in terms of WEB success.

      Agreed. Success means running your own show that an audience is enjoying and is able to sustain some kind self-monetization.

    The answer to this obviously depends on the goal of the creators. However, one key factor from the business perspective is to produce a show that is self funding. Funding method come in many shapes and sizes, but one of the keys is ofter to produce a series with a large number of "participants". This translates into high views, high subscriptons, high follows and high likes. etc......but they key is to translate all this to high revenue, relative to the cost of the show. This lead to a self sustaining business model.
