A cryptic message left in #LG15chat (on Freenode) today.

In the past few weeks we have seen the explosive return of live streaming services such as Meerkat and Periscope which both attempt to integrate Twitter into their core services. These apps hope that deep Twitter integration will give them a key advantage over such old guard services such as Ustream or Live Stream, or the later entries into the field such as YouNow and YouTube. These services might best be described as micro-broadcasting because they are most often watched by a few hundred, or less, people who interact with the content via live chat. However, almost as soon as these services launched a familiar problem began to frequent them, with the usual unfortunate fall out: "troll drama”.

Enter TrollCamBust.

TrollCamBust was created by a pair of identical twins who started their coding careers working for the National Security Agency (NSA). While hired to work on the war against terrorism, the mischievous brothers (who go by the online name of

) soon found themselves hacking into their girl friends webcams in their spare time, for reasons one can probably imagine. However, seeing the rise of the massive troll problem on these new streaming services the brothers saw an opportunity to seek revenge by striking at the core vulnerability of any troll: their identity.

With this goal in mind the brothers quickly coded a new app which first pulls in your social graph from twitter allowing you to identify any trolls in your feed. Then, using their NSA skills they added a simple button that will instantly hack the trolls computer, activate their webcam, and stream the resulting video feed on the TrollCamBust app. The app gives you the option to either activate the red light on the computers camera or use what they call ‘stealth mode” which gives no warning to the unsuspecting troll. While apps like Periscope and Meerkat allow users to “heart” video streams that you like, TrollCam takes a slightly different approach by allowing you to post a skull and bones to express your disgust with the trolls.

We are glad to see that someone has finally done something to deal with the troll problem on the interwebz and we wish the brothers well with their new app. TrollCamBust for both iOS and Android will be available for free download later this afternoon from the TrollCamBust web site.
